Workforce Education Specialist provides professional development and technical assistance on the workforce-driven contextualization of academic instruction, along with the coordination of and technical assistance for career pathways programs.

In the role of Workforce Education Specialist, I design and deliver professional development and coordinate career pathways programs that incorporate the contextualization of academic content to align with local workforce needs, including industry-specific content, professional soft skills, and workplace readiness skills through instructional design and strategic partnerships with employers, state agencies, and training providers. I coordinate the PluggedInVA project for the state through individualized technical assistance, face-to-face training, site visits, maintenance of the PluggedInVA website, semi-annual data collection, and annual meetings. Additionally, I provide technical assistance to SNAP-ET and DARS grantees working with the PluggedInVA model.

I hold a bachelor's degree in Spanish from the University of Arizona and a masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Northern Arizona University. I am currently working toward a PhD in Education at Virginia Commonwealth University, with a focus on adult English language learners and college access, to be completed in 2018.

I began working with English language learners on the United States / Mexico border during my undergraduate work and decided to pursue my masters in TESOL at Northern Arizona where I taught Freshman English and ESL. After graduation, I taught English as a foreign language in Ukraine and then continued to teach English at community colleges in Arizona and here in Virginia. I have worked at VALRC since 2008 and also work as a research assistant with VCUís Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium (MERC).

Kate loves taking very long walks with her dog, her husband Jeff, and her little daughter Evie. She also enjoys running when she can, reading great books, traveling to new places, playing the violin, catching up with friends, watching really good tv, and being outdoors whenever she can.
